What is a condiment?
A condiment is a substance such as salt, mustard or pickle that is used, to add flavour to food.
Therefore, condiments could be anything that is savoury, sweet or spicy that we may add to our food, to impart a particular flavour, to enhance the flavour of the food, or in certain cultures, to complement the dish.
My culture is a mixed of the Asian and Western cultures. So, one can just imagine how far the extent could be, when one is talking about condiments.
Also, I am such an avid fan of condiments, particularly the ones that are easy to make and nice to eat.
One of the condiments I enjoy making is fruit jam. It could be apples, blueberries, cherries, plums, etc., especially whenever these fruits are in season and/or in abundance at our local supermarkets.
Whenever the occasion calls for it, I would make my own sauces. It could be as simple as the chicken rice chilli sauce, sambal belacan or a more tedious satay sauce (my favourite!).
On special occasions only and if I were in the mood, I would make my own chutney, usually mixed dried fruit chutney, which goes very well with any curry dish or flavoured rice.
Since I hardly eat salad at home, I also prefer to make my own salad dressings because from my experience, the salad dressings that I usually bought from the stores would often be left in the fridge for months, even post expiry date. Besides, ever since I found out that it is so easy to make, I no longer see a reason to waste money on salad dressings.
I can go on and on, talking about condiments but let's just keep it short and sweet, shall we?
